Burj Khalifa (in Arabic : برج خليفة ; literally. "Tower Khalifa "), formerly known opening as Burj Dubai , is a skyscraper in Dubai , United Arab Emirates , which with its total height of 828 m is the tallest structure built sometime. Construction began on 21 September 2004 and the building was officially opened on 4 January 2010. The building is part of the newly built Downtown Dubai , located near the main shopping district of the city and occupying an area of ..2 km².
The design of Burj Khalifa was prepared by the US Bureau Skidmore, Owings & Merrill , with chief architect is Adrian Smith (architect) and chief designer - William Baker . The general contractor is South Korean company Samsung .
The total value of the Burj Khalifa is about 1.5 billion dollars , and the whole complex Downtown Dubai - 20 billion dollars. Completion of the project coincides with the global economic crisis that began in 2007, and a glut in the local real estate market. As emirate Dubai is difficulty in servicing their debts, it is forced to seek help from neighboring emirate Abu Dhabi . As a result, during the opening ceremony of building surprisingly it was renamed from Burj Dubai to Burj Khalifa in honor of the Emir of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan , because of the critical support given by him to the project.
In March 2009 the developer Emaar Properties announced that the price of office space in the building has reached 43 thousand dollars per square meter, and housing - 37 thousand dollars per square meter. Due to weak demand in the real estate market in Dubai, rents in the Burj Khalifa declined by 40% for the first ten months after the opening of the building. In October 2010 around 825 of the 900 residential apartments remain empty.
