National history museum
National History Museum e One of the largest and richest history museums on the Balkan Peninsula. It holds more than 700 000 monuments depicting the history of Bulgarian lands for 8,000 years until today. In the museum are exposed only 10% of all those values and monuments.
National History Museum was established in 1973, its first exhibition was opened in the Palace of Justice in Sofia in 1984 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. Since 2000, the museum is housed in the former home № 1 of the government residence in Boyana in Sofia.
The main exhibition of the museum is located in five halls: Prehistory, Ancient Thrace, Middle Ages - First (VII-XI century) and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (XII - XIV century), the Bulgarian lands in XV-XIX c. And Third Bulgarian Kingdom (1878 - till present days).
The collection dedicated to prehistory (VII - II millennium BC.) Were presented various bone and flint tools, idol figurines, ornaments and ceramics.
In another room are presented unique treasures from Thracian times. The museum preserves and famous worldwide Panagyurishte, Rogozen, Letnitza treasure and also discovered near the village Duvanlii treasure. Here you can see the many burial gifts and ornaments discovered in the investigation of graves across the country.
The medieval history of Bulgaria is presented in a special hall. The collection includes objects from the Age of the First (VII-XI c.) And the Second (XII - XIV c.) Bulgarian Kingdom - ornaments, coins, decorative ceramics, icons, In another hall the history of the Bulgarian lands was told during the period of Ottoman domination (1396 - 1878). This period of history of Bulgaria is divided into two parts - Late Middle Ages (XV - XVII century) and Bulgarian Revival (18th - 19th centuries). Various subjects include the struggle for church and national independence, the activities of the revolutionary organizations, the outbreak of the April Uprising of 1876 and the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878.
More about the history of the country after the Liberation in 1946, visitors can learn in the next room. With over 600 exhibits shown in the development of the new Bulgarian state. Special attention is paid to the Bulgarian monarchs - can see things that belonged to the royal family, numerous material evidence of the resumption of Bulgarian statehood (1878 - 1946 AD).
In a separate hall are exposed ancient coins - among the exhibits are valuable coins from the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II (1218 - 1241) The King Ivan Alexander (1331 - 1371 AD), Byzantine coins and more.
In the ethnographic collection of the museum is a reconstruction of the Renaissance school.
In the courtyard of the museum has a rich collection of stone columns, monuments from different periods - Greek, Roman, Byzantine.
The museum is selling souvenirs, information materials, specialized literature. Available to visitors has a library.
